Flynn was an early and vocal supporter of then-candidate Trump, adding military and national security legitimacy at a time that many former national security officials publicly denounced Trump’s foreign policy positions. On the campaign trail, even lead supporters in chants of “Lock Her Up,” a reference to rival Hillary Clinton, who faced an FBI investigation into her use of a private email server. In a fiery 2016 speech at the Republican National Convention, Flynn said of Clinton: “If I did a tenth of what she did, I would be in jail today.”
